The Melplash Agricultural Society Bursary Scheme

bursary_winnersEach year the Melplash Agricultural Society offers a grant to a student aged 18 years and over who is planning to pursue courses in subjects connected to agriculture.   Students of agriculture, forestry, horticulture or any closely allied topic who live within a 12 mile radius of Melplash could be eligible for a bursary up to £1000 per annum.  We were delighted to award the 2011 bursary to six local students.

For 2011 the Society’s Bursary has been awarded to:

Hayley Loveless

Hayley lives in Bridport and is starting her first year degree course in Farm Management in September 2011 at Kingston Maurward.  She is a very successful exhibitor of pigs and this year at the Melplash Show won the Stanley Swaffield Loveless Perpetual Challenge Trophy for best animal and the Christopher Hill Ltd Perpetual Challenge Cup  given to the exhibitor gaining the highest number of points.

Isabelle Solly

Isabelle has just completed her first year studying for a BSc in agriculture at Newcastle University.  For her specialism she is leaning towards agronomy at the moment although she may well end up in some advisory capacity in the future.   She is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Solly, Ferndown Farm, Wynford Eagle who won the Kitson & Trotman Perpetual Cup for Best Small Farm Conservation & Environmental Practice at this year’s Melplash Show.

Jennifer Diment

Jennifer lives at Corscombe where she helps with the milking and the lambing on her parents’ farm.  She has just completed her first year of a National Diploma in Agriculture at Kingston Maurward . She particularly enjoys working with livestock and has been voted top student this year.

Rachael Hutchings

Rachael lives at Melbury and has just completed her first year of a National Diploma in Agriculture at Cannington College, Bridgwater. She will be completing the NDA next year and then hopes to travel to America to study agricultural practices.

The Society will be continuing to support:

Miss Pam Sibley who will be starting her 3rd year at Liverpool University in September on the undergraduate veterinary course (BVSc)

Miss Stephanie Dyke who will be starting her 2nd year at the Royal Agricultural College studying a degree in Agriculture with land management.

If you would like to apply for a Bursary from the Soceity then we would like to hear from you.  Financial support will be extended throughout the successful student’s course, provided that he/she receives a satisfactory annual report from his/her college or university.  Those eligible to apply must live within a 12 mile radius of Melplash. Please click here to download an application form.  Completed forms should be returned to the Society Offices at 23 South Street, Bridport, Dorset DT6 3NT.

Those candidates shortlisted will then be required to provide scholastic and personal references and will be interviewed in late Spring/early Summer so that finance can be in place for the next academic year.  The closing date for applications is 1st April of each year.

The successful candidate is presented with the Bursary at the annual Melplash Agricultural Society Show.
