HEAVY HORSES

 Entry Fee:  £7.50 refundable after the Show, if entry forward. £25 towards travelling expenses will be paid by The Melplash Agricultural Society, to each lorry, providing the exhibitor has at least one entry forward on Show Day (see Rule 15). 

Classes 81a & b may be amalgamated if in the Judge's opinion there are not enough entries forward. 

HEAVY HORSE PARADE:  All competitors are invited to join the Parade in the Main Ring at 2.30 prompt and will receive a Special Rosette. 

 All Prize Winners must parade in the Parade of Winners or forfeit their prize money.  

The Sponsors of the prestigious Championships are Wadworth & Co., Brewers , Devizes, Wilts, on of 3 remaining English brewers still making local weekday deliveries by heavy horse and dray. 

Classes 81a & b & 85 are Qualifiers for the West of England Heavy Horse Championships, to be held on Sunday 27th  September 2009 at Gillingham & Shaftesbury Agricultural Society's Turnpike Showground, Motcombe, N Dorset.

RULES OF QUALIFICATION 

1.         Qualifiers must be from Recognised Heavy Horse Breeds, of any age, Stallions, Colts, Gelding, Fillies and Mares. 

2a.        The In-Hand Qualifier must be the Show Champion of the Day.  If already qualified then if necessary the Qualifier position can go down the championship line to 4^th position.  If the top four horses have already qualified no qualifier can be nominated. 

b.         The Show Harness and Decorated Harness Qualifier must be the highest placed on the day, down to 4th position if necessary.  A set of Harness can only be used upon one qualifying horse.  NOTE:  Patent harness will not be accepted as a qualifier. 

3.         The same horse cannot qualify for the In Hand and the Harness Championships throughout the championship season. 

4.         Should a Qualifying Horse refuse a first qualification this will exclude that horse from qualifying in the same Championship at any further Qualifying Shows this year. 

5.         Should a Qualifier subsequently be unable to attend the Championships, on the 27th September at the Turnpike Showground between Shaftesbury and Gillingham in North Dorset then the Championship Secretary must be notified no later than 5th September 2009.   The position can then be passed to the next eligible horse.

Special Note Horses qualifying for the Championship and others from the same stables may enter and take part in the Wessex Heavy Horse Society's Annual Show on the same day and part of the day's events. 

Show classes include:  Mare 3 years old and over, Gelding 3 years old and over, Yearling, 2 year old, Colt and Filly Foals, Harness, Ridden, Agricultural and Trade Turnout, Qualifier to Championships.

Class 80 The Best Heavy Horse, In Hand, Mare or Gelding, without harness.  (This is a local  class - see Rule 6).

Class 81a The Best Heavy Horse, Mare, three years old or over. 
Prize Money:  1st  £25; 2nd £20; 3rd £15; 4th £10; 5th £7; 6th £5; 7th £3.

Class 81b The Best Heavy Horse, Gelding, three years old or over. 
Prize Money:  1st  £25; 2nd £20; 3rd £15; 4th £10; 5th £7; 6th £5; 7th £3.

Class 82 The Best Heavy Horse, Foal
Prize Money:  1st £15; 2nd £10; 3rd £7; 4th £5.

Class 83 The Best Heavy Horse, Yearling or two year old.
Prize Money:  1st £15; 2nd £10; 3rd £7; 4th £5.

Class 84 The Best Suffolk Horse, Mare or Gelding, two years old and over.
Prize Money:  1st £15; 2nd £10; 3rd £7; 4th £5.

Class 85 The Best Turned-out Heavy Horse, Mare or Gelding, to be shown in breeching harness. 
Prize Money:  1st  £25; 2nd £20; 3rd £15; 4th £10; 5th £7; 6th £5; 7th £3.

ALL COMPETITORS IN THE HEAVY HORSE CLASSES ARE AUTOMATICALLY ENTERED IN CLASS 86.

Class 86 Best Shod Heavy Horse. 
No Entry Fee. 
Judge:  Mr J Cooper, OBE, FWCF (Hons), Surrey
Prize Money:  1st £25;

This Competition is for the best shod horse in the Heavy Horse Section (Classes 80 - 85).  The judge will examine each horse before or during the line-up for preliminary judging, taking into consideration:

 a. Condition of the feet
 b. The making (or preparation) and fitting of the shoes
 c. Nailing, and position of the clips.
Normal shoes and showing plates are equally acceptable, PROVIDED they are suitable for the horse.

THE FINAL JUDGING OF THE BEST TURNED OUT HEAVY HORSE AND PARADE OF ALL HEAVY HORSES ATTENDING THE SHOW WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE MAIN RING TO JOIN THE GRAND PARADE

C6 THE MELPLASH AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY CHAMPIONSHIP
First and Second Prize Winners in Classes 80 to 84 eligible.  Champion £15.  Reserve Champion £10.

S20 - The Robert Dupont Dupont Perpetual Challenge Trophy, presented by Robert Dupont, Esq., for the Best Turned-Out Heavy Horse.

The John Wakely - Cherry Farm, Beaminster - Perpetual Memorial Trophy will be presented to the Best Heavy Horse in Class 80.

The George Mayo Memorial Cup - Heavy Horse Section.  For the Best Gelding Heavy Horse in Class 81.

A bottle of Golden Cap Whisky will be awarded to the First Prize Winners in Classes 80-85 by JC & RH Palmer Ltd, Bridport.

A Winner's Sash has been very kindly given by B and B Associates, Beaminster for the Winner of Class 80.
