2011 Hedging & Ploughing Match
The annual Melplash Agricultural Society’s Hedge laying & Ploughing Match held on Saturday at Bilshay Farm by kind permission of Symondsbury Estate and Mr James Green, saw more entries in all classes, particularly in the Hedge Laying, than have for many years. The increased entrants into the Hedge laying classes were due in the main to the very successful free hedge laying session that the Society organised and ran the weekend before. The session was very well received with over 20 people attending.
One of them Dai Holder had seen the free hedge laying session advertised whilst on holiday in Charmouth, he went along enjoyed it so much that he travelled all the way up from just outside Newport, Wales to enter the novice hedging class and to his amazement and delight was rewarded with the third prize. Two other well-known locals who had never hedged before they attended the free hedge laying session were Mr Richard King of Kitson & Trotman Solicitors and Mr Luke Gatehouse of Carpet World, who took 2nd place!!
The ploughing was well contested too and proved to be quite a challenge for the judges who finally announced the Champion Ploughman in the Vintage Class as Mr Brian Johnston and the Champion Ploughman in the Match Ploughing as Mr B Dennett.
Melplash Agricultural Society President Mr George Streatfeild said “The ploughing and hedging match is at the heart of the Melplash Show and it was wonderful to see so many visitors come and enjoy the event in such beautiful surroundings. We had a record number of young competitors in both competitions. Also in the hedging we had some total novices who were just beginning to learn who did a first class job. This event would not happen without the huge effort from Tim Frampton, [Section Chairman for Hedging & Ploughing] and his stewards. A special thank you must also go to all the sponsors too”
