Despite challenging weather conditions for gardeners this year, the Melplash Agricultural Society annual garden competition was once again very well supported. Over two days the judges travelled across West Dorset visiting seventeen gardens in and around Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Chideock, Beaminster, Mosterton and of course Bridport. (Entries have to live within 15 miles of Melplash Village Church). The judges this year were last year’s overall winner and winner of the medium-sized garden, Mrs Jane Pinkster from Beaminster and the winner of the allotment category, Mr John Studley from Hinton St George.
Best Large Garden

Best Small Garden
1st Mr Jerry Goade, Chideock
“On walking through the gate you get the wow factor: it is well planned, with a good mix of varying heights and colour”.

Best Allotment
1st Mr Stephen Hillier, Charmouth
“A very good mix of vegetable plants, all looking very healthy and well fed. Particularly liked the idea of a frog pond to control slugs!”

Special Award
Donald Jolliffe, Netherbury
“Mr Jolliffe has made excellent use of a very small space. In the front garden there is a wide variety of plants offering a beautiful display of colour.. although a little cramped the vegetable patch has a full variety of healthy plants. It was also a pleasure to hear that Mr Jolliffe knows the names of all his plants! “

BEST OVERALL GARDEN, after much consideration by the judges, the best overall garden was awarded to Mrs Erika Savory from Lyme Regis
The winners wireceived their prizes in the Horticultural Tent at 4.30pm on Melplash show day – Thursday 25th August 2016.
