Farming Words Writing Competition for Schools 2024

We are very pleased to announce that, following the success of last year’s writing competition, we shall be running the competition again this year.  All local primary schools and home tutor groups within a 12-mile radius of Melplash Village Church in Dorset are invited to take part.

2023 Competition winners, St Mary’s School, Bridport

 

Each entry is to be an original piece of non-fiction writing that is connected to food and farming.  It should focus on one of these topics:

  • If I became a farmer I would….. or If I could work on a farm I would like to …
  • My favourite farm animal… because….
  • How to grow my favourite meal?
  • A day in the life of a farmer..

Number of Words Required

Reception – 150 words

Key Stage 1 Year 1/2 – 250 words

Lower Key Stage 2 Year 3/4 – 500 words

Upper Key Stage 2 Year 3/4 – 500 words

All entries must be clearly marked with the name of the author, year group/age and school details on the back of the piece of writing on A4.  Please ensure your details are clearly written so we can contact the winners.

Competition Prizes  

Our competition is very kindly sponsored by Chesters Harcourt, development Land and Commercial Property Specialists

The winner in each category will receive a certificate and book voucher for £30

The runner-up in each category will receive a certificate and a book voucher for £20

The schools considered by the judges to have the best entries overall will receive a certificate and voucher for £500, and the runner-up will receive a certificate and voucher for £250

The entries will be judged by a panel with relevant experience in primary school writing and members of the Melplash Agricultural Society.
